George E. Tracy ’56

George E. Tracy ’56, a reverend monsignor, died on September 5, 2009, the 12th anniversary of the passing of his beloved mentor, Mother Theresa. After Dartmouth, where he sang tenor in the Injunaires, George transferred and later graduated from Georgetown University. He began a career in international banking on Wall Street before deciding to become a Roman Catholic priest, serving in the Diocese of Portland, Maine. He earned a pontifical degree, Ph.L., at the Jesuit Weston College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and an M.A. and Ph.D. at Boston College. George began teaching at Boston College in 1965 and later in his career joined the faculties of the Jesuit Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Missouri; Saint John’s University, New York City; Cambridge University and Saint Edmund’s College in Cambridge, England; Franciscan University, Steubenville, Ohio; and Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary, Emmitsburg, Maryland. In 1976 George met Mother Teresa of Calcutta. A lifelong friendship developed, through which he found the call to the priesthood. Following ordination in June of 1984 George was a Navy chaplain to the Marine Corps. He treasured the camaraderie associated with serving the needs of Marines, completing 11 years of active and reserve military duty. George wrote a book that received the nihil obstat and imprimatur (approvals) of the Holy Roman Catholic Church in 1998.
