William T. “Toby” Brewster ’83

William T. “Toby” Brewster ’83 passed away peacefully on March 16 surrounded by his wife, Becca ’84; sons Will, Eli ’17, Peter, and Seth; and brother and best friend Seth ’82. Raised in Manchester, Maine, Toby spent multiple summers as a camper and counselor and later longtime board member of Birch Rock Camp. Toby entered Dartmouth after graduating from Deerfield Academy. At Dartmouth he majored in English, was a member of Phi Delta Alpha and Sphinx, went on a language study abroad to France, played rugby, and was a swimmer. Following graduation from Harvard Graduate School of Education, Toby devoted 35 years of his career to education. Most of this time was spent at St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire, teaching, working in admissions and financial aid, college counseling, coaching cross country, and assistant coaching Nordic skiing. He especially enjoyed teaching “In Tune with Nature” with colleague and friend Rick Pacelli. While Rick focused on teaching the science behind ecosystems, Toby drew out the inner poet in students. Eric Sachsse, a friend since Deerfield, described Toby “as one of the kindest, most self-effacing, caring, and generous-of-heart people…not a mean or disingenuous bone in his body. We’ll never forget his impish, mischievous smile and his endearing and infectious signature laugh.” A donation in Toby’s memory may be made to St. Paul’s School (www.sps.edu), Birch Rock Camp Scholarship Fund (www.birchrock.org), or Granite VNA Hospice (www.granitevna.org).
