William Sigourney Fletcher ’52
William Sigourney Fletcher ’52, M.D., passed away at home on July 20, 2014, a victim of cancer. Born in 1927 in Arlington, Massachusetts, Bill later moved to Woodstock, Vermont. He attended and excelled at Tilton Prep School in New Hampshire. In 1945 Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman. After his discharge he entered and graduated from Dartmouth in 1952. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi, Alpha Kappa Kappa and Dragon. After completion of Dartmouth Medical School Bill graduated from Harvard Medical School in Boston followed by surgical internship and residency at Boston City Hospital. He accepted an oncology fellowship at the Middlesex Hospital in London, England, in 1958. Returning to the United States, Bill began a position as chief resident in the department of surgery at the University of Oregon Medical School. He became head of the division of surgical oncology in 1975. Bill was a member of the board of governors of the American College of Surgeons, U.S. representative to the World Health Organization’s melanoma committee, past president of the Portland Surgical Society and many others. Bill retired in 2002 after serving 42 years at Oregon Health and Science University. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Natalie, whom he married while at Dartmouth. Children Susan, Brad and Karen, their spouses and five grandsons survive him. He is also survived by his devoted partner, Charlene, and her family members.
