William D. Woodbury ’57

William D. Woodbury ’57 passed away on March 10 at his home. Bill came to Dartmouth from South Hadley (Massachusetts) High School. He majored in earth sciences and geology and was active in Phi Kappa Psi, the Geological Society, the Dartmouth Outing Club, the Mountaineering Club, the Ledyard Canoe Club, and the Winter Carnival Council. Committed to his country, he honorably served in the U.S. Army in Korea following the Korean War. Bill went on to further his education at the Missouri School of Mines in Rolla. He had a long and fulfilling career as an engineering geologist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Federal Bureau of Mines. He was an active member of the American Legion throughout his career. In his younger years Bill was a competitive ice hockey athlete and as he grew older he liked to watch soccer matches. In his free time he could often be found sailing along the beautiful North Carolina coast. Bill was a faithful member of St. Peter’s United Methodist Church. He enjoyed singing in the choir. His love of music led him to the Crystal Coast Choral Society, where he embraced its vision to educate, inspire, and encourage a love and appreciation for choral singing. Bill is remembered as a loving husband of 37 years, supportive father, and proud grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Sheryl; daughters Pagan, Lee, and Lorrie; stepchildren Susan and Brian; and many grandchildren.
