Steven Lazarus ’52
Steven Lazarus ’52 passed away on June 10 in New York City. Steve was born on May 31, 1931, in Brooklyn and graduated from high school in Long Beach, New York. He graduated with honors from Dartmouth in 1952, earning a degree in English “with distinction.” Steve was a member of Kappa Kappa Kappa, the Dartmouth Outing Club, and WDBS, and was a varsity letterman in crew. He joined the U.S. Navy after College and was sent to Harvard Business School, where he graduated first in his class and was a Baker Scholar. In his early career as a naval officer, Steve moved among the ranks of both the military and political arenas to found and act as the first director of the U.S. Bureau of East-West Trade. He retired from the Navy as a captain in 1973. Steve then joined the Baxter Corp., a healthcare concern, in 1974. He held many jobs, including president of the artificial organs division. He became group vice president of the Health Care Services Group in 1985. In 1986 he was the founding president and CEO of the Argonne-Chicago (ARCH) Development Corp. (now ARCH Venture Partners), which partnered with numerous influential academic institutions, national research and corporate laboratories, scientists, and entrepreneurs. He is survived by his wife, Arlene; sons Paul ’76, Scott, and Jeffrey ’87, daughters-in-law Kitty, Julie, and Julia; and four grandchildren.
