Stanley McDermott ’75

Stanley McDermott ’75 passed away at his home in New York City on September 3, 2021, after a yearlong battle with cancer. He was the devoted husband of Gail for 45 years and a gentleman of impeccable character, keen intellect, and gentle spirit. He was born in New Orleans to the late Stanley Jr. and Elizabeth Nairne McDermott. Stan graduated from Jesuit High School (New Orleans) and then moved to the Hanover Plain to join the class of 1975. He went on to earn a law degree from Tulane University Law School. After many years practicing law in New Orleans, Stan joined the New York office of the global law firm DLA Piper, where he practiced for more than 30 years and gained an international reputation in litigation and arbitration, handling a wide range of sophisticated commercial disputes. He was also a frequent advisor on trade issues for numerous overseas companies. Stan appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court, numerous U.S. circuit courts of appeal, and many U.S. district courts. Stan had significant international litigation experience and handled scores of arbitration proceedings before internationally recognized arbitral organizations in the United States and the United Kingdom. Stan especially loved to read, travel, and play golf. A younger Stan enjoyed mountain climbing. His favorite city in the world was London. As an avid reader and student of British history, Stan collected an impressive library of first-edition books and original correspondence from the most influential British writers and politicians across the 18th and 19th centuries. In addition to Gail, Stan leaves brother Kevin, sister Martha, and several nieces and nephews.
