Robert T. Marchant ’57

Robert T. Marchant ’57 died on March 6 in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he moved the previous year. He died peacefully accompanied by family, including wife Kate, with whom he recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. During most of their marriage, Bob and Kate lived in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Bob graduated from Wilbraham (Massachusetts) Academy. He was called up during the Korean War, serving two years on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hornet. At Dartmouth he majored in English, was in Phi Gamma Delta, and played hockey. He earned an M.B.A. from Columbia University.His career began with Fairchild Publications (New York City) in advertising sales. He next worked as a publisher’s representative for Capital Cities Broadcasting. Bob joined American Society of Materials, where he was publisher of the society’s magazine with a worldwide circulation of more than 60,000 scientists, engineers, and testing experts. Bob believed that nothing expanded one’s horizons like travel and the associated study of art, history, and politics. He wrote it took him “to Hittite Turkey, to the bank of the Euphrates across from ancient Mesopotamia…to the political hotbed of Damascus, to the wonderfully preserved site of Nefertari in Thebes, and finally to university in China,” where he taught English in 2002. For many years Bob interviewed candidates for Dartmouth. In retirement he devoted himself to alumni affairs, serving as local club president, class agent, mini-reunion chair, and class president (2007-12). He is survived by Kate, son Joseph, son Terence, and family.
