Robert McCorriston Jr. ’57

Robert McCorriston Jr. ’57 died September 10, 2020, in Kula, Hawaii. Bob was born in Hawaii in 1935. In 1941 he witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor from his childhood home. Bob graduated from Punahov School in Honolulu. At Dartmouth he majored in economics and was a member of Sigma Chi. The McCorriston family has deep roots in Hawaii. He returned to the island for a career as an industrial relations specialist with American Factors (land development), Hawaiian Airlines, and the city and county of Honolulu. Bob’s great passions were outdoor life and competitive sports. While on Oahu he devoted weekends to developing his skills in sailboat racing. He loved the challenge of inter-island races without benefit of any directional equipment other than a yarn telltale on the jib. For years he, friends, and extended family enjoyed long holiday weekends sailing to Molokai and Lanai. Fleeing the traffic and pressures of a burgeoning Honolulu, the family moved to upcountry Maui in 1975. He worked with the Maui County of Personnel Services and started farming protea, one of the oldest known flowers. He took great pleasure in outrageous jokes, travel with family and friends, hunting, fishing, and playing golf at home and abroad. He leaves a legacy of a life steered by love of island places. Bob is survived by Kathy, his wife of 55 years, daughters Joy and Maile, many grandchildren, and a large McCorriston family.
