Robert Martin Schaeberle ’45
Robert Martin Schaeberle ’45 died September 29, 2011, from complications of Alzheimer’s, at an assisted living establishment in Exeter, New Hampshire. He came to Dartmouth from Glen Ridge (New Jersey) High, participated in V-12 and served on a destroyer escort in the Pacific for two years carrying Marines. He married Barbara on V-J Day, when his ship returned to the West Coast for repairs, and then went back to China for another year. Upon discharge in 1946 he began working at Nabisco, where he spent the next 40 years. He rose from trainee to chairman of the board and CEO in 1973. Under his leadership Nabisco was one of the country’s largest contributors to food banks across America. He remained as chairman of Nabisco Brands Inc. after the merger with R.J. Reynolds and retired at the end of 1986. He served as president of Financial Executive Institute’s New York chapter and as chairman of the Grocery Manufacturers of America Inc. He also served on the board of Libbey-Owens-Ford, the Prudential Insurance Co., American Arbitration Association and the committee for economic development of the United Nations. He was a member of the advisory board of Chemical Bank New York Trust Co. and the board of overseers of the New Jersey Symphony. In 1981 Bob was predeceased by Barbara, the mother of his children Robert, Mark and Gregg, who survive along with his six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His second wife, Barbara, died in 2003.
