Robert H. Woody ’50

Robert H. Woody ’50 died on April 21, 2010, in Salt Lake City, Utah, surrounded by his family. During World War II he served from 1943 to 1946 with the famed 10th Mountain Division in Italy. While at Dartmouth Bob was a member of the Dartmouth Mountaineering Club, which he served as president, the ski squad and Chi Phi. He married Barbara Follansbee of Norwich, Vermont, in 1950 and began his long career as a newspaper man working for rural newspapers in Colorado and Idaho before settling in 1957 with The Salt Lake Tribune, where he became business editor in 1964. His business column “Up and Down the Street” became a popular favorite of many readers. Barbara referred to Bob as a Renaissance man. A colleague commented that, “He wrote about business and commerce but was an artist and adventurer in his soul.” He dressed in a suit but he usually rode his bicycle to work. He had a fierce competitive nature as a journalist and a gregarious personality that entertained his colleagues in the newsroom. He played classical guitar and studied architecture, karate and the Renaissance flute. He was survived by his wife of nearly 60 years and their four children.
