Robert E. Heitzman Jr. ’70

Robert E. Heitzman Jr. ’70 of Allendale, New Jersey, died on May 21 after several years of chronic illness. During his career as a fellow in the Society of Actuaries, Bob worked for several major actuarial consulting firms, focused on pension planning for multinational corporations. He spent a year in Indonesia with the Harvard Institute for International Development and a year in Washington, D.C., lobbying for the actuarial profession and writing a textbook on Social Security. Bob was a member of the anti-war group that occupied Parkhurst Hall in 1969, protesting the Vietnam War and ROTC on campus. He and his wife returned to Dartmouth in 2019 to participate in the 50th anniversary of the occupation with his fellow protesters. He was passionate about duplicate bridge, competing in tournaments at the expert level. He read extensively on every aspect of the game, wrote articles for bridge publications, and provided occasional online commentary for key matches. Following graduation Bob had several entry-level jobs before joining Kwasha-Lipton, where he finished his actuarial exams and became partner. During this time he also met his future wife (Helen Raleigh) and adopted his 8-year-old stepdaughter, Betsy. He is survived by Helen, his wife of 46 years; sister Barbara and her husband, Brian; three daughters; and five grandsons.
