Robert B. Matthews Jr. ’51
Robert B. Matthews Jr. ’51, a lifelong Maine resident and contributor to the Maine communities in which he lived, died on July 17, 2013, at his home in Ludlow. Bob grew up in Brewer and was a three-sport athlete there and at Phillips Exeter Academy. At Dartmouth he was president of Delta Kappa Epsilon, a member of Sphinx and captain of the baseball team. Frank Logan ’52, a teammate, recalls: “Whitey was a great team leader and a talented outfielder who chased many long fly balls when I was pitching.” Following graduation he served for three years in the U.S. Army as a sergeant. Upon returning to Maine Bob worked for 22 years for the Chevrolet division of General Motors in zone office management and as the owner of a Chevrolet dealership in Houlton. He later became the assistant superintendent of Southern Aroostook Vocational Education District, retiring in 1990. Bob was a member of the Houlton school board, president of the local chamber of commerce and an active Rotarian. His love of baseball continued throughout his life; he was a Little League coach for many years and never missed attending games and other events in which his children and grandchildren were involved. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Pat, three children, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A son predeceased him.
