Richard A. Sherwood ’57

Richard A. Sherwood ’57 died on November 27, 2016, at the Seaside Rehabilitation Center in Peak’s Island, Maine, after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease.Dick grew up in Maine and came to Dartmouth in 1953 from Morse High School in Bath. He spent several years in the U.S. Army between his junior and senior years at Dartmouth. He earned his master of arts degree in sociology from Duke University in 1964. Dick held teaching posts at the University of North Carolina, Bucknell University in Pennsylvania and Ricker College in Houlton, Maine. In 1974 he moved to Augusta, Maine, as senior planner for the Maine State Planning Office. He held that post for almost 20 years. In 2001 Dick retired to Peak’s Island, a beach getaway where he enjoyed numerous outside activities, including fly-fishing, cycling and walking. He was a long-time member of the Old South Congregational Church in Hallowell and Brackett United Methodist Church in Peak’s Island. Dick leaves his wife, Emily, a son and three grandchildren.
