Phillips Carter Cooke ’54

Phillips Carter Cooke ’54 of Marblehead, Massachusetts, passed away on May 14 in Needham, Massachusetts. He was predeceased by his wife, Sally. Phil came to Dartmouth from Swampscott, Massachusetts, and Kimball Union Academy, where he played football and tennis and excelled on the ski team. At Dartmouth he ran cross country, coxed for the crew, and raced and jumped for the ski team. He graduated with a major in geography and a minor in history, entering the U.S. Air Force as an ROTC second lieutenant. On leaving the Air Force in 1957, Phil entered the family-owned building materials businesses. He pursued a second career as a financial planner with Mass Mutual Life Insurance Co. until retirement. Phil lived an active life, sharing many adventures with others: skiing Tuckerman Ravine at age 12; bicycling from Swampscott to Mackinac Island, Michigan, at 16; trying out for the Olympic ski team; climbing the Grand Tetons; fighting forest fires in Oregon; skiing 121 ski areas across 78 years; climbing all 48 of the New Hampshire White Mountains more than 4,000 feet; golfing at 146 courses; and traveling to six continents with Sally. Phil is survived by son Jonathan ’84 and wife Sarah; son Peter and wife Marianne; daughter Jennifer and husband Richard; and grandchildren Rachel, Josh, Maddie, Jake, Matt, and Sam.
