Peter Whipple Stanley ’52

Peter Whipple Stanley ’52 of Scituate and Marshfield, Massachusetts, passed on May 23. He was the beloved husband of the late Jean (Davies) Stanley until her passing in May 2017. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on April 18, 1928, and grew up in Waban, Massachusetts. He graduated from Vermont Academy in 1946, then served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy for two years. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1952 with a degree in sociology. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta and played freshman hockey. He began his 35-year career as an executive at New England Telephone Co. in 1952. Peter was an expert skier and enjoyed sailing and playing and tennis. Pete was also a very active Dartmouth alumnus, serving as president of his local Dartmouth club, president of the Club Officers Association, and a district enrollment director for 15 years. He and two of his sons attended his 65th class reunion last September. He was a longtime member of Hatherly Country Club in Scituate. He was an active member of First Trinitarian Congregational Church in Scituate for more than 50 years. In retirement he was involved with the Telephone Pioneers and Scituate Etrusco Associates. Peter is survived by sons David, Mark (and wife Dianne), and Jon; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
