Peter R. Mann ’51

Peter R. Mann ’51, a much-honored contributor to the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles as volunteer, lay treasurer and administrator, died on March 16 at his home in Pacific Palisades, California. Pete was recognized by the bishop as canon of the Cathedral of St. Paul and was named to the Order of the Angels. An active volunteer in his home church, he was a leader in rebuilding the sanctuary after a devastating fire. Service was a recurring theme in Pete’s life. He was named man of the year in Crenshaw, California, for his work in helping to integrate the community and for serving as president of both the chamber of commerce and Rotary Club. At the Neighborhood Youth Association in Venice, California, he helped inner-city young people attend and succeed in college. Following graduation from Dartmouth, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Dragon, Pete spent 30 years as a General Motors automobile dealer. He was president of two dealerships in the Los Angeles area. The outdoors was another of Pete’s passions. He and his wife, Tita, who predeceased him, built a second home in the mountains of Bridgeport, California, where they hiked, climbed, canoed and rode horseback. Backpacking in the San Bernardino and San Gabriel mountains involved the whole family; they all earned membership in the Sierra Club’s Hundred Peaks organization in recognition of the number of peaks they climbed. He is survived by three children, including Peter Jr. ’83.
