Peter Godfrey ’68

Peter Godfrey ’68, M.D., died July 24, 2018, at his home in Olean, New York, following a short illness. In addition to his wife of 48 years, Sharon, Peter is survived by son John and daughters Jennifer, Erin, and Amy; grandchildren Dorothy, Charles, and Yuri; sisters Judith, Patricia, and Jane; and many nieces and nephews. Born July 8, 1946, in Boston, Peter was the son of Dr. John and Jean Fuller Godfrey. He served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army in Stuttgart, Germany, from 1967 to 1969. He married Sharon on February 7, 1970, at St. Mary of the Angels Church in Olean. Peter came to Dartmouth from Olean High School and then earned his M.D. from Albany Medical College in 1978. Peter practiced internal medicine and occupational medicine at the Olean Medical Group. He was devoted to his patients and was highly regarded as an astute and caring physician. He retired from practice in December 2017. Peter’s greatest joy was his family. He enjoyed golfing, downhill skiing and sailing and was an avid bicyclist and cross-country skier and a voracious reader. Peter was loved and admired for his kindness, strong character, and gentle manner.
