Timothy Charles Eagan ’66, a highly regarded political cartoonist, passed away on August 25, 2025, from cancer in Santa Cruz, California. A San Francisco native, Tim was a government major and member of Alpha Delta at Dartmouth. He went on to earn a law degree at Hastings College of the Law (now UC Law San Francisco) and served briefly as a deputy district attorney in San Jose, California. Switching careers, Tim became a cartoonist and in 1981 launched Subconscious Comics, a strip focused on fantasy and sometimes strange environments that ran, at first, mostly in alternative weeklies in the San Jose area. In 1994 the San Francisco Examiner invited Tim to create a political comic strip as a regular feature. That was the beginning of Deep Cover, which ran for the next 25 years in a variety of weeklies and dailies nationwide. Tim was also a talented speaker. His comedy pieces ran in NPR’s All Things Considered, and he produced bits for the National Federation of Community Broadcasters’ award-winning Surf City Live! and KUSP’s 15-Minute Comedy Hour. He built his dream home in Bonny Doon, a small mountain community outside of Santa Cruz, and lived there with his wife, Jane, and daughter Natalie for 37 years. Donations in Tim’s memory may be made to the Environmental Defense Fund, the Sierra Club, or any organization dedicated to preserving wilderness.
