Timothy Butterworth ’66 —teacher, carpenter, writer, woodsman, and N.H. state representative—died of complications related to Parkinson’s disease and congestive heart failure in his hometown of Keene, New Hampshire, on January 25. At Dartmouth he spent four years rowing crew and earned an A.B. in English literature. From 1967 to 1970 Tim taught at Vermont Academy and became the father of two children. In 1970 he began teaching at Leland and Gray Union Middle and High School in Townsend, Vermont. Tim and Sue purchased a 60-acre farm in Chesterfield, Vermont. His marriage ended in 1976 and the farm, Sugarbush Hill, became Tim’s passion. He married Kay Kloppenburg in 1984, and they taught English as a second language in Granada, Spain, and San Jose, Costa Rica, during sabbaticals. From 1996 to 2002 Tim served as selectman and chairman of the board of selectmen in Chesterfield. He also served as a Democratic member of the N.H. House of Representatives from 2006 to 2010. He is survived by Kay; children Lateef, Brook, and Ben; five grandchildren; three siblings; six nieces and nephews; and dozens of friends who lived or stayed at his farm. Memorial gifts may be made to the University of Hartford Women’s Advancement Initiative or the Southern New Hampshire Indivisible Fund.
