Thomas E. Clarke ’66 , M.D.—an orthopedic surgeon in Springfield, Massachusetts, for 35 years—passed away on November 9, 2025, surrounded by his family. Born in Ellsworth, Maine, Tom was a three-sport athlete at Longmeadow (Massachusetts) High School. At Dartmouth he was an All-Ivy defensive end and captain of the undefeated 1965 team that won the Ivy Championship and Lambert Trophy. Tom received the Nils Swede Melson Award, given to the most academically talented football player in New England. Tom was also a stalwart on the Dartmouth lacrosse team and a member of Theta Delta Chi, Green Key, and Casque & Gauntlet. After Dartmouth Tom graduated from Harvard Medical School and completed his surgical internship in San Francisco and a residency in orthopedics at Mary Hitchcock Hospital. Following two years as an officer in the Navy, Tom started a private orthopedic surgery practice in Springfield with doctors Titus and Hansen that lasted 35 years. He also served as president of the medical staff at Mercy Hospital in Springfield. Tom was an avid skier and golfer who enjoyed traveling the world and spending time with his nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Donna; son Dirk (and wife Maureen); son Justin (and wife Jane); daughter Kristina; sister Kristina; grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law; and nieces and nephews. Donations in Tom’s honor may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
