Issue

November-December 2026

Roy G. Nyren ’55 passed away on June 19 in Gainesville, Virginia. Born on March 1, 1933, Roy came to Hanover from Southington (Connecticut) High School. His membership in the Human Rights Society at Dartmouth foreshadowed a 60-year career in Christian ministry. Roy attended Yale Divinity School and was ordained a Congregational minister in 1959. His long service to the church carried him from Denver to Milwaukee and Cleveland, where by 1976 he had been elected to the board of the National Academy of Parish Clergy. Soon after he began a 10-year assignment as pastor of the United Church of Christ, Congregational, in Burlington, Massachusetts. At that time, he and son Dirk ranked fourth in father-and-son tennis teams in New England. By 1989 Roy—along with his wife, Nancy, to whom he had been married for 34 years—had gone to San Francisco to serve as senior minister of the First Congregational Church. This was Roy’s last posting, though he remained active in a cluster of area clergymen after he and Nancy moved to Florida to join Dirk, who was a tennis pro in Boca Raton. The couple made a final move to Gainesville, Virginia, to be close to Dirk, who was teaching in the local school system. After Nancy’s death in 2018, Roy continued to enjoy a weekly pickleball game with Dirk, who survives him along with daughter Rebecca and son Kevin.
