Robert Stuart Block ’68 died on February 19 at the Center for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, Vermont, following a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Bob was born in Salamanca, New York, and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park, New York. At Dartmouth he majored in religion and was a member of the Alpine ski team, ski patrol, and Tri-Kap. After graduation he served as an admissions interviewer and Alumni Council representative, and received the class of 1968 2023 Give A Rouse Award, recognizing his service to the College and community. Bob graduated from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, did his surgical internship and residency at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, and trained in orthopedics at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York. He practiced orthopedics in Bennington for more than 30 years. Bob loved people and got to know his patients and their families personally. He was a former president of the Vermont Medical Society and a vocal advocate for healthcare reform. Beyond medicine, Bob was an avid bicyclist and on weekends could be found pedaling through Bennington County and nearby New York. He enjoyed cross-country skiing and snowshoeing and shared his love for the outdoors with his family. He also had a passion for great wine, traveling to Europe to meet winemakers and donating bottles for fundraisers. Bob is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lora; daughters Alexandra and Jessa; and four grandchildren.
