Richard Patrick Lena Jr. ’83 passed away unexpectedly at Yale New Haven Hospital in Connecticut on December 10, 2025. Friends affirm that his best moments were spent with his wife and daughters: coaching his kids in soccer and spending time at vacation homes in Niantic, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. Rich was a natural athlete. As captain, he led the Amity Regional High School football team in Woodbridge, Connecticut, to the 1978 State Championship and was named All-State running back. Continuing his football success at Dartmouth as a fullback, he won a share of the 1981 and 1982 Ivy League championships. He also participated in a language study abroad in France, was president of Beta Theta Pi, and went on to earn his B.E. from Thayer School in 1984. “Rich was the king of the one-line zinger, yet he was a heartfelt guy who pulled all-nighters just to see the sunrise,” says John Kania ’83. “I will miss his mischievousness.” Rich began his career as a system engineer at IBM, followed by an international executive position with Tangoe Inc. His final years were spent as an information technology consultant for Stanley Black & Decker. As an alumnus, Rich served as vice president of his regional Dartmouth club from 1987 to 1989. He is survived by his wife, Christine; daughters Jaclyn and Kendra; and siblings Christopher ’88, Karen, Daniel’91, and Michael ’84. He was predeceased by parents Jean and Richard ’53.
