Born in the Bronx, New York, Richard grew up in nearby Hartsdale. A political science major at Dartmouth, he was active in Army ROTC and the Dartmouth Outing Club and graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. Richard went on to graduate cum laude from Harvard Law School before serving as a captain in the Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps in Vietnam. Richard then joined Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy law firm and specialized in commercial litigation. He retired as a partner in 2002 and as a consulting partner in 2005. Richard met his future wife, Helen, on a blind date in Manhattan in 1977, and they embraced the adventure of life together as they moved from New York City to Summit, New Jersey; Bethesda, Maryland; and Amelia Island, Florida. In retirement Richard was a volunteer math tutor to foreign students in Washington, D.C., prepping for the GED. He was an elder at two churches and on the board and served as president of the Amelia Island Plantation Community Association. Richard enjoyed time in the garden, reading, puzzling, walking, hiking, traveling, and ballroom dancing with Helen. She survives him with children Mary, Paul, Edward, and Cynthia and 12 grandchildren.
