Peter L. Powers ’57 died in Manchester, New Hampshire, on May 27. Pete graduated from Vermont Academy and at Dartmouth majored in English, belonged to Phi Tau, the Glee Club, DOC, and Army ROTC. He spent two years in the U.S. Army, a year and a half of it in Germany, where he inspected cryptographic facilities. Returning to the States, he began his career with Esso Standard Oil Co. (now Exxon Co.), joined the N.H. National Guard, and was assigned to an artillery unit at Camp Drum (Watertown, New York). Called to active duty in response to the Berlin crisis, he ended up at Fort Bragg (North Carolina) as executive officer of an 8-foot howitzer battery. At Exxon Pete held various sales and supervisory positions throughout New England. In 1981 he was transferred to Kingston, New York, as field sales manager (service stations). He retired early in 1990. After a life marked by 13 Army and corporate moves, Pete and his wife built their dream house on top of a hill in Hopkinson, New Hampshire. They loved sitting in the breakfast nook, drinking coffee in the mornings and pointing out wildlife and various mountains. He was a charter member of the Hopkinson Rotary Club and became district governor in 2003. He was an Alumni Fund volunteer (2006-23). Pete is survived by daughters Janet and Nancy, sons Peter Jr. and Mark. Connie, his wife of 62 years, predeceased him.
