Issue

March-April 2026

Peter H. Searl ’57 passed away peacefully on December 23, 2025. Peter came to Dartmouth from Deerfield (Massachusetts) Academy. He majored in psychology and was a member of Psi Upsilon and in Army ROTC. From 1958 to 1967 he served intermittently in the U.S. Army. He earned a law degree from Syracuse University in 1965. In 1957 he married Priscilla Burns and eight years later they moved with their three children to Honolulu, Hawaii, where he lived for twenty-two years, practicing law, running marathons, teaching Hawaiian history and serving as an interpreter at the Mission Houses Museum in Honolulu, an historic site interpreting daily life in the past focusing on the missionary period (1820-63). He later moved to Massachusetts and became an historical interpreter at Old Sturbridge Village. While there he met Mary Ellen Birkett, a professor at Smith College. They married in 1991 and made their home in Northampton, Massachusetts, with extended residences in Paris, France, and Geneva, Switzerland. In 2013 they moved to Santa Barbara, California, where he “continued to explore the world with the stamina of an athlete, the mind of a lawyer, the curiosity of a historian, and the temperament of an artist.” Peter leaves Mary Ellen, his wife of 35 years; sons Christopher and Peter; daughter Elizabeth; and four grandchildren.
