Peter Anthony Francis Smith ’79

Issue

November-December 2026

Peter Anthony Francis Smith ’79 died on August 2. Pete and his family lived in Berlin, New Hampshire, where he battled cancer for several years with an indefatigable attitude. Pete was born on June 19, 1957, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and attended Pittsfield Senior High School. At Dartmouth he majored in economics and joined Alpha Delta, where he served as rush chair and president. Pete also played golf and rugby and was a member of Sphinx, the fraternity board of overseers, and the Intrafraternity Council. Pete was married to Kelly Anne McDonald for 39 years and they raised three daughters. He worked in sales for technology companies and was independent, hardworking, charismatic, cheerful, and always had a joke. He was well read, intellectually curious, and preferred listening rather than talking about himself. He most enjoyed spending time with family, including camping in Michigan; watching the Patriots, Red Sox, and Michigan football; and cheering his grandsons at soccer. Pete served as president and member of the board of the McDonough Golf Scholarship Foundation, which provides scholarships to about 100 N.H. caddies to attend college. Pete is survived by Kelly; daughters Brandi, Laura and husband Pete, and Molly; and grandsons Carter and Brodie.
