Peter Allan Dale ’65 died on March 31 in California. He came to Dartmouth from Cairo, Egypt, after spending his early years in Tehran, Iran, and Cairo as the son of an intelligence officer. An English major, Peter was in Army ROTC. Following graduation, he earned a master’s at Columbia University, then in 1966 served as an Army intelligence officer in Middle East affairs at the Pentagon. In 1969, he moved his family to England and earned a master’s in literature from the University of Keele and a Ph.D. from University of Cambridge. In 1974, Peter began teaching and researching English literature at Harvard University, where he also served as Adams House senior tutor, using his calm demeanor and quick wit to resolve differences. In 1980, Peter accepted a position in the University of California, Davis, English department. He served as department chair and then dean and vice provost of undergraduate studies. In 2007, he started teaching British detective fiction seminars as an emeritus professor. Peter and his wife, Evelyn, enjoyed travel, visiting almost every country in Europe and returning often to their favorite, Italy. He enjoyed the 10 dogs they adopted through the years. Peter leaves behind Evelyn, his companion for more than 63 years; daughter Nicole ’89; son-in-law Jeff ’87; son Christopher; daughter-in-law Sarah; and grandchildren Theo and Miles.
