Mark Allan Miles ’79

Issue

May-June 2026

Mark Allan Miles ’79 died from neck and throat cancer on December 31, 2025. He lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, where he grew up. At Dartmouth he was known as “Fuzzy.” Mark originally entered with the class of ’78 then joined the class of ’79. He majored in religion, was a member of the varsity hockey team (selected as MVP of the Auld Lang Syne tournament), joined Kappa Sigma and Dragon, and went on a language study abroad to France. After Dartmouth, Mark played pro hockey in Germany before earning a master’s in education and beginning a rewarding career in teaching and coaching. He taught and lived in The Pas and Winnipeg and continued to play, coach and referee hockey for the next 40 years. In 2015 an infection damaged Mark’s heart and he underwent a heart transplant. He found new purpose in life as a transplant survivor, promoting the benefits of organ donation and becoming the Manitoba provincial director of the Canadian Heart Transplant Association. He is survived by children Matthew and Victoria and extended family, including older brother Gord ’76, with whom he played hockey twice a week for 20 years. Dartmouth friends note that “Fuzzy was a strong personality and a great guy who endured the most severe health challenges between his heart transplant and the cancer that took him. His toughness and resilience were tested and never found wanting.”
