January-February 2026
Lloyd Nelson Martin ’82 died unexpectedly on April 29, 2025, in Portland, Maine. Lloyd came to Dartmouth from Van Buren (Maine) District High School, earning an A.B. in history and a law degree from the University of Maine. After practicing for years in Lewiston, Maine, Lloyd moved to Portland, where he served as a court-appointed guardian ad litem advocating for disadvantaged children. As his longtime partner, Margaret Gaertner, put it, Lloyd found the thing he was meant to do. Outside of work, Lloyd enjoyed reading, museums, documentaries, hiking, basketball, golf, board and card games, a wide range of music, and exploring new places. Lloyd was a Patriots, Celtics, and Maine Black Bears hockey fan. “Lloyd was kind and generous,” recalled classmate Mukul Kamat. “We met through the Aquinas House and were roommates during sophomore fall. Lloyd took me to northern Maine for Thanksgiving with his family—my first in America! During the years we shared skiing weekends, Christmas with his family, and eating lobster in Maine. We went on a Dartmouth alumni trip to Spain. Lloyd was one of my closest friends, and I shall miss him dearly.” Peter Swann ’83 said, “I’ve known Lloyd since grade school. He was brilliant, kind, compassionate, and honest. Lloyd dedicated his life to helping others, especially the less fortunate. He became a lawyer to make an even greater difference. He touched countless lives—including mine—and he will be deeply missed.” In addition to Margaret, Lloyd leaves daughter Emily.
