John William Melski ’68

Issue

November-December 2026

John William Melski ’68 died peacefully in Ithaca, New York, on August 4 after a period of declining health with Alzheimer’s. John came to Dartmouth from New Milford, New Jersey. A psychology honors major, he was active in the Newman Society and premed. He enjoyed theater and chess and Dartmouth overall, saying he would have still been a student if the pay were better. After Dartmouth, he attended Johns Hopkins Medical School, graduating in 1972. He enjoyed a long career at Marshfield Clinic in Wisconsin as a doctor of dermatology and a director of clinical informatics. His colleagues and residents quote him to this day; his patients found him knowledgeable and approachable. In 2008 he was quoted in a New York Times article, “Health Care That Puts a Computer on the Team,” saying that there is no payoff to technology alone—only in people using technology wisely. He retired in 2016 and moved in 2020 to Ithaca. Family and friends remember his sense of humor (corny, pun-filled, and very nerdy), philosophy of life (grounded in the belief that we should care for each other), and daily acts of service (such as dishing out ice cream). He is survived by wife Linda; children David, Kasey, and Eric; granddaughter Audrey; and sister Christine.
