November-December 2026

John Q. Arnold ’66 , a prominent banker and community leader, passed away on August 1 in St. Louis, Missouri. John was a member of Phi Delta Alpha and freshman and varsity crew at Dartmouth, where he earned an A.B. in history and economics and an M.B.A. in the Tuck 3-2 program. He served as president of the Dartmouth Club of Chicago in 1978 and 1979. He married social worker Alex Dauterman in 1976. They raised two sons in Chicago, where John spent 24 years at Harris Bank, rising to deputy chief credit officer. In 1991 the family moved to St. Louis, where he joined Mercantile Bancorporation, retiring as vice chairman in 2000. He remained active in business, serving as chair of the manufacturing company John Henry Foster from 2008 until 2026. John’s judgment and integrity made him a trusted leader far beyond the bank. He was on the board of the YMCA, a director and committee chair at Enterprise Bank, and a longtime board member of Mercy Hospital, where he was named board chair emeritus. He received the 2012 Award for Excellence in Governance from the Missouri Hospital Association. In each role he brought the intelligence, steadiness, wisdom, and care that defined his life. John is survived by Alex; sons and daughters-in-law Jonathan and Lori and Justin and Jodi; and grandchildren Emmett, Anya, and Penn. Memorial contributions may be made to the Saint Louis Zoo.
