John Paul Carroll ’57 passed away on August 4. Jay graduated from the Englewood (New Jersey) School for Boys. He majored in zoology, was active with the rifle team, DOC, and Bait & Bullet. He earned his medical degree from Albany (New York) Medical School in 1961 and completed his medical residency in orthopedic surgery at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. Jay served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force, where he directed the orthopedic clinic at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. During his flights over the Pacific Northwest while in the Air Force, Jay became captivated by the natural beauty of the West and particularly the area surrounding Bend, Oregon. Following military service, Jay returned to the East Coast to start private practice in Holyoke, Massachusetts, but then moved to the Bend Orthopedic & Fracture Clinic. Arriving in Bend when it was a small logging and outdoor community, Jay provided trauma, fracture, and reconstructive orthopedic care to Oregon families for many years. He traveled on Saturdays to care for patients in remote areas of the state and usually managed to find time for hunting and fishing. On Sundays he often made rounds at the hospital, attended Mass, and spent the afternoon trap shooting. He retired in 1996. Jay is survived by his wife, Carol; and children Thomas, Matthew, Elizabeth, Jennifer, and Kathryn and their families, including 12 grandchildren.
