Issue

Nov - Dec 2014

John J. Hugus ’78, M.D., of Wausau, Wisconsin, died on October 6, 2013, at Aspirus Wausau (Wisconsin) Hospital, after a courageous 17-year battle with multiple myeloma. The chief of surgery at Aspirus Spine and Neurosciences Institute, John was also an avid cross-country skier and canoeist. He coached numerous ski teams and he won multiple national championships in marathon canoe races. Classmates and friends remember John as having a warm and gentle soul with a sunny disposition. At Dartmouth he was a member of Phi Delt and Fire & Skoal, as well as the Canoe Club. According to his obituary in the Wausau Daily Herald, he “liked to be known for who he was, not what he did, [and] when asked about his occupation he would answer ‘janitor’ rather than a spine surgeon.” Survivors include his wife, Robin, children Ellyn, Benjamin and Mark, stepchildren Emily and Tyler, parents Floyd and Jean and brothers David and Stephen.
