November-December 2026

James R. Cohen ’63 died at his home on August 24. He was from New York City and attended the High School of Music and Art, where he was in the glee club and debating society. At Dartmouth Jim majored in philosophy, sang with the Glee Club, and belonged to the Yacht Club. He obtained a J.D. in 1966 and an LL.M. in 1967, both from New York University. He entered private law practice with two Wall Street firms and then was a founding partner of the Manhattan law firm of Kleinberg, Kaplan, Wolff & Cohen, which now has more than 100 partners and staff. Jim was a passionate lover of culture and music and an active singer and songwriter. After retirement, he devoted much of his time to songwriting, culminating in the Off-Broadway production of Soldier’s Song, a compilation of his music. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carol, whom he met at Fire Island, New York, during an eclipse of the sun; two children; and six grandchildren.
