James Cornell Kerbin ’55 of Virginia Beach, Virginia, passed away July 11 after a nearly decade-long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Born in Montclair, New Jersey, on February 6, 1933, Jim grew up in and around Millbrook, New York, and graduated from the Millbrook School. At Dartmouth he was a member of Navy ROTC and later served as a weapons officer in the Navy. Following his discharge, Jim moved to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where he and his first wife managed a travelers’ rescue service and ran the small, private Tamarind School in the early 1970s. Though Jim’s early adult life was marred by the losses of his son Eben and stepdaughter Stacey, his journey illustrates a man defined by resilience and tenacity. In 1982, after moving back to New York to teach at Millbrook School, Jim married again. With second wife Carol and their son Nathaniel, Jim moved in 1993 to Virginia Beach, where he conducted a distinguished teaching career for 25 years at Cape Henry Collegiate School. Equally at home at the chalkboard in a high-level math class, in the director’s chair of a theater production, and in the stands cheering sports teams, Jim was a pillar of the community. He is survived by his wife, son, and grandson plus two sisters, in-laws, and many nieces and nephews.
