Howard W. Nannen Jr. ’63 died peacefully at home in Brunswick, Maine, on July 24 after 10 years of progressive Alzheimer’s dementia. He was born in White Plains, New York, and attended Longmeadow (Massachusetts) High School, where he participated in several sports. Howard majored in political science at Dartmouth and was a brother of Tri-Kap. In 1964 he married Janet, to whom he was married for 62 years, and obtained a master’s in landscape architecture at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1966. They moved to Hartford, Connecticut, where Howard worked as a city planner for five years. Concerned by the demolition of Victorian homes in downtown Hartford, he raised money to renovate the James Colt House, a successful project for which he was a general partner. This led to further historic renovations in Hartford, with Howard cofounding Hartford Development Group, a full-service real estate company. Howard and Janet also bought and restored a Queen Anne Victorian house in nearby Weathersfield, Connecticut. At this time, he was also an adjunct professor at University of Hartford and Trinity College. The family later moved to Maine, where Howard built seven timber-frame houses in and near Harpswell, Maine. He served as chair of the Harpswell 2005 comprehensive plan committee and in other town volunteer positions. Howard was predeceased by son Jason in 1989; he is survived by Janet, two children, and two grandchildren.
