Henry J. Binder ’57

Henry J. Binder ’57 died on December 8, 2025, in New Haven, Connecticut. Henry came to Dartmouth from the Horace Mann School (Bronx, New York). He was premed and majored in zoology. He attended New York University School of Medicine in New York City, graduating in 1961. After completing his internship and residency in internal medicine at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan (1961-1963), he joined a new gastroenterology (GI) section at Yale University as a fellow and instructor. He then served in the U.S. Air Force as captain for two years at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California. After he spent a year at the University of Chicago, Yale recruited him back to the GI section in 1969 where he rose through the academic ranks to become professor of medicine in 1978 and was awarded an honorary degree. He became professor of cellular and molecular physiology in 1994. Henry was an internationally recognized scholar, researcher, teacher, mentor, and physician. He dedicated his career at Yale to advancing the study and treatment of digestive diseases, collaborating with colleagues in New Haven and as far away as India, Iran, Bangladesh, and Australia. An avid skier, Henry owned a home in Stowe, Vermont, and skied in northern Vermont well past his 80th birthday. Henry served the College as alumni interviewer for admissions (2005-15). He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joan; children Stephen and Sarah; two granddaughters; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
