Issue

May - June 2016

Harvey I. Epstein ’57 passed away in Atlantic Beach, New York, on September 17, 2015, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Harvey grew up on Long Island and came to Dartmouth in 1953 from Woodmere Academy. At Dartmouth he majored in government and was a member of Pi Lambda Phi, serving as president in his senior year. He also belonged to the sophomore orientation committee, Dartmouth College Athletic Council and Pre-Law Club. He earned his M.B.A. from New York University in 1959. Harvey had a long, successful career in the investment business, serving as president of Dreyfus Sales Corp. and later as president of Pace Funding Corp. in New York. A classmate described Harvey as a “combination of practical, level-headed businessman and playful, imaginative visionary. He rarely let his enthusiasm carry him away and rarely let practical considerations hold him down. He was a natural leader.” Dartmouth remained important to Harvey throughout his life. He was very active in Dartmouth affairs, serving as a class officer and on the executive committee from 1987 to 2006. He also served in numerous fundraising capacities through the years. Another classmate remembers Harvey as a talented quarterback of the successful Pi Lam football team and obsessed with having a daily ice cream cone. Harvey is survived by his wife, Arlene, a son, a daughter (’84) and seven grandchildren.
