Gerard Abbazia Hekker ’82 died October 19, 2025, in Jakarta, Indonesia, of complications following a stem cell transplant. Born September 10, 1960, in New York City, he came to Hanover from Stuyvesant High School. Gerard majored in religious studies, belonged to Tabard/Sigma Chi, and participated in dance, graduating in 1986. He attended the University of San Francisco School of Law, ultimately practicing corporate law in Singapore, Jakarta, and Los Angeles and retiring in 2025 as a partner with Duane Morris. Friend Paul De Vierno ’83 says Gerard lived his last 27 years in Singapore and “bravely fought the illness and accepted the failure of its treatment stoically, sending me a note with the words, ‘And so it goes.’ ” De Vierno says Gerard enjoyed prework morning runs and had planned to retire to Bali. Gerard’s sister Maria ’84 says he left Dartmouth periodically to explore passions—including studying classical ballet at the Joffrey Ballet. She adds, “I think the most transformative thing for him at Dartmouth—besides the people he met—was learning Mandarin. That led him to study further in Taiwan and China [Tunghai and Shaanxi Normal universities] and then a long legal career in Asia.” Throughout, Gerard pursued ballet, tai chi, bass guitar, Mandarin, skiing, swimming, and triathlons. Gerard is survived by his wife, Nunuk; daughter Stella; former wife Hsin-Yu; stepdaughter Farah; sisters Maria and Gretchen; and friends worldwide who will miss his wit and compassion.
