George Emlen ’66 —a gifted conductor, composer, arranger, and music educator—passed away in early April. Raised in Wayne, Pennsylvania, George graduated from Episcopal Academy. At Dartmouth he was a music major, played rugby, and was a member of Theta Delta Chi and Dragon. After four years as an enlisted man in the Navy and brief stints as a blacksmith and small-town newspaper editor, George earned an advanced degree in choral conducting at the New England Conservatory. Settling in Blue Hill, Maine, through the years George conducted chorale groups throughout the state and served on the faculty of the New England Conservatory, Lesley University, College of the Atlantic, and University of Maine. He also taught and conducted at Noble and Greenough School and was music director at the Putney School. In 1984 he started four decades working as music director of the Revels, a performing arts organization that stages spectacular celebrations around the United States. He was responsible for selecting and training the adult and children’s choruses; researching, selecting, and arranging the show’s music; and working with instrumentalists. In recent years George worked with Bobby McFerrin in the vocal improvisatory genre of circlesinging, which he incorporated into his conducting and teaching. George is survived by Jan, his wife for 58 years; children Hannah and Sadho; and grandchildren Hazel, Juniper, and Marigold. Donations in his honor may be made to Revels at revels.org.
