Fred L. Offensend ’65 passed away in Portland, Oregon, October 17, 2025, from complications of advanced Parkinson’s and a cerebellar stroke. He came to Dartmouth from Rochester, New York. An engineering science major, he also received a B.E. in 1966. Fritz went on to earn an M.S. in industrial engineering (1967) and a Ph.D. in engineering economic systems (1971) from Stanford University. He spent a memorable postdoctoral year at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute before beginning a distinguished 30-year career—first at SRI International as a decision analysis consultant and later as vice president in financial engineering systems at Bank of America in San Francisco. He resided in Los Altos, California, for more than 50 years. In our 25th reunion book he described his career: “I am an engineer who solves bet-your-company business problems that others do not know how to solve.” Fritz is survived by his wife of 57 years, Susanne; son Ashley; daughter-in-law Beth; and two grandchildren. He is survived also by friends from each stage of his life’s journey. He loved Boy Scouts and related outdoor adventures, woodworking, tools, hardware stores, home improvement projects, helping neighbors, good food and wine, dogs, golf, growing vegetables, correct grammar, San Francisco Opera and Symphony performances, and Rock-Steady boxing for Parkinson’s. Fritz prided himself on being a lifelong problem solver and always looked at life through a uniquely crafted lens. A sense of boyish optimistic mischief remained with him until the end.
