Edward Emerson Clark ’52 passed away in Pasadena, California, on June 18, 2025. Ed was born on May 4, 1930, in Middleborough, Massachusetts. He was an honors graduate of Tabor Academy in Marion, Massachusetts, and from Dartmouth in 1952 with a major in international relations. Ed was a member of Sigma Chi, Green Key, the International Relations Club, and the Undergraduate Council. He received a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1957. He was in active service as an officer in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1954 and a reservist until 1965. Ed worked as a corporate lawyer with Atlantic Richfield Corp., first in New York City and then in Los Angeles. Once a liberal Republican, he joined the Libertarian Party in 1971. In 1972 he was the first chairman of the Libertarian Party of New York and chaired the Libertarian Party of California from 1973 to 1974. Ed ran for governor of California in 1978 and for president of the United States as the nominee of the Libertarian Party in 1980. After that campaign, Ed largely left active politics but remained a Libertarian. In 1970 Ed married Alicia Garcia, a Mexican-born textiles executive. She chaired the Libertarian National Committee from 1981 to 1983. The couple were longtime supporters of the Los Angeles Opera. She survives with son Edward. He was predeceased by his father, Fletcher, class of 1912, and brother Fletcher ’45.
