Dominic R. Cols ’76
January-February 2026
Dominic R. Cols ’76, cochair of the class of 1976 50th reunion, died October 17, 2025, in Raleigh, North Carolina, after a 15-month battle with glioblastoma. Nic was born on Christmas Day 1954 in Antwerp, Belgium, to Simon and Mary Ellen Trotter Cols. His family moved to America in 1957, and he grew up in Emerson, New Jersey. He attended Bergen Catholic High School and at Dartmouth majored in math and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and the Glee Club. Nic married Sandy Poore in Baltimore, and his career with IBM and Aflac led them to Colorado, Arizona, North Carolina, and Georgia. He passed along his love of camping, skiing, hiking, and singing to children Greg and Melanie. Nic sang in barbershop choruses, classical choirs, and church choirs throughout his life. Most recently he was a member of the Master’s Men gospel chorus, Oak City Sound barbershop chorus, and the Seventh Dimension quartet in Raleigh. During retirement he played golf, volunteered at the golf course, sang, and played the part of Abraham Lincoln at several local events. For Nic, a walk around the neighborhood took a while because he would take time to chat with neighbors along the way. His greatest joy was spending time with grandchildren Erin, Elyse, Emilia, Margot, Ellen, and Hugh. He is survived by Sandy, his children and their families, and siblings Patricia, Matthew, and Danielle. Nic was preceded in death by siblings Gregory and Christiane.
