David Makau Mulumba ’66

David Makau Mulumba ’66 , a retired professor, passed away at his home in Montclair, New Jersey, on October 19, 2018. Affectionately known as “The Professor,” David was born in Kenya in 1941 and graduated from Kabaa High School in Machakos, Kenya, about 60 miles east of Nairobi. He won a nationwide essay contest, with his prize being a trip to the United States and a full scholarship to Dartmouth. He majored in history at the College and earned his master’s in world history from Northeastern University before pursuing his true passion, teaching. He taught English and History in various high schools across New England, New York, and New Jersey. During this time, he reunited with Syokwaa Mulumba who also grew up in the same village in Kenya. They married on June 24, 1972. He became a professor of African and African American studies at New Jersey City University in Jersey City, New Jersey, serving for a time as chair of the African American studies department. David continued to teach until his retirement in 2016 at age 75. He loved history, geography, literature, and all forms of knowledge. He loved to cook, loved to debate current events, and was a raconteur of the first rate. He loved to tell stories of his childhood, of history in general, and most of all, he loved to spend time with his family. David was predeceased by Syokwaa and seven siblings. He is survived by sons Kiilu and Kyalo; grandchildren Zen, Isaac, and Asuna; 12 siblings; and numerous nieces and nephews.
