David Ferguson Swain IV ’52 passed away in Hendersonville, North Carolina, on December 25, 2025. David was born on August 1, 1930, in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. He attended Lyons High School in La Grange, Illinois, and graduated from Dartmouth with a bachelor’s and master’s from the Tuck School. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi and Dragon. David served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1955 to 1957, attaining the rank of lieutenant, j.g., and serving as captain of the cutter, Marion. Following military service, David worked at Harris Bank and Trust in Chicago and then joined David F. Swain III Co. in Oak Brook, Illinois. David supported many causes and organizations and was involved in Oak Brook, serving as chairman of the planning commission and on its board of trustees. He was a founder of VOR: A Voice of Reason and longtime member of Helping Hand. He served on the vestry of the Episcopal Church in La Grange, Illinois, and later as an elder at Christ Church in Oak Brook. After retiring to North Carolina, he attended First Baptist Church and the Immaculate Conception Church in Hendersonville. He is survived by his wife, Rochelle; daughter Sheryl and her husband, Steven; son David V.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
