Cordelia Allegra Ross ’07

Issue

January-February 2026

Cordelia Allegra Ross ’07 passed away on August 19, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. She is survived by her husband, Wayne Morris, and their daughter, Viola Sylvia. A lifelong reader and lover of language, Cordelia grew up in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and earned her A.B. in English from Dartmouth, where she also worked in the greenhouse and cultivated her love of flowers. She went on to complete an M.A. in humanities at the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in English at the University of California, Davis. Her dissertation, Unearthing England: Conquest and Identity in Underground Narratives, 1150-1250, explored depictions of caves in medieval literature—a topic that merged her twin passions for scholarship and caving. Cordelia taught literature and writing at several colleges before joining the faculty of St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin, Texas, where she also coached the caving team and trained with the National Cave Rescue Commission. Colleagues described her as “a unicorn,” equally at home in the classroom and underground. She was known for her wit, compassion, and ability to make Shakespeare and Beowulf come alive for her students. Cordelia’s commitment to teaching as an ethical calling, love of beauty and community, and fierce devotion to family and students continue to inspire.
