Charlie Calvert ’78 died on March 3, 2025, after an initial diagnosis of oral cancer at 52. Charlie came to Dartmouth from Darien, Connecticut, and lived in Topliff freshman year. He left Dartmouth before graduation. “Though his time in Hanover was short, his impact on all who knew him was immense,” says classmate Lauren Campbell Edkins ’78. “He made the world is a better place.” After graduating from Evergreen College, Charlie worked as a journalist, then embarked on a career in computer science, writing books and giving presentations on how to code, using the software of whichever company he worked for at the time. He wrote a dozen books on computer coding and taught computer science at Bellevue College for 10 years. Charlie loved sailing, music, hiking, and photography. “Everyone who ever met Charlie remembers him well,” says Edkins. “He made you want to be your best because you wanted him to think better of you. ‘Never crump’—a term he learned on freshman trips—was his motto, and it inspired many to push past their limits.” Charlie is survived by his wife, Margie; brother Jim; four stepbrothers, including John Battle ’75; and numerous nieces and nephews.
