Brian Snyder ’96 passed away May 11 after a long battle with cancer. Brian is survived by his wife of 20 years, Carly; children Zachary, Alexandra, and Penelope; mother; and sister. Brian took pride in his children, announcing exuberantly Zachary’s recent admission to Emory and relishing the dance performances of Alexandra, an accomplished ballerina. Penelope, his youngest, brightened his face every time she entered the room. Hailing from Philadelphia, Brian studied biology at Dartmouth. He attended medical school at Temple University, did his neurosurgical residency at Mount Sinai in New York, and completed a fellowship in functional neurosurgery at the University of Toronto. Until recently Brian practiced neurosurgery at multiple hospitals across Long Island. His research was widely cited, and he was one of the foremost practitioners of deep brain stimulation for the treatment of epilepsy, Parkinson’s, and other disorders. Brian arrived at Dartmouth with a love of the outdoors and spent much of his time in Hanover hiking, climbing, and enjoying the Upper Valley. He learned to ski at the Skiway, visited most of the DOC cabins, and led trips up Moosilauke in all four seasons. He passed his love of New Hampshire to his kids, and they frequently spent weekends together at the Ravine Lodge. A Collis “miniversity” wine-tasting class in college blossomed into a love of wine and a prodigious collection. He also served as Phi Delt’s social chair.
