Benjamin Jenks Gilson ’54 died July 20, predeceased by wife Sarah; father Charles, class of 1921 and an honorary degree recipient in 1966; and uncle Arthur, class of 1919. Ben lived his early high school years in Shanghai, China, where his father was an Episcopal missionary priest. At Dartmouth, Ben roomed with Stan Rosenberg, joined the Glee Club, Phi Delta Alpha/Phi Delta Theta, Alpha Kappa Kappa medical fraternity, and Ledyard Canoe Club, helping initiate and construct the Titcomb Cabin on Gilman Island. Ben entered Dartmouth Medical School in his senior year. He joined the Navy as an ensign in 1955 and earned his M.D. in 1957 from Harvard Medical School while on active duty during his senior year. Ben completed his orthopedic training in the Navy, interrupting his 20-year active service for 10 years with a private orthopedic practice in Attleboro, Massachusetts. He retired from the Navy in 1987 as a captain and director of surgical services at the Navy hospital in Newport, Rhode Island. Ben’s Dartmouth Outing Club years influenced Navy activities. He was instructor in cold weather medicine, setting up field hospitals, and traveled with Marine amphibious groups. Love of singing began with the Glee Club, and with Sarah he sang in choruses in multiple states, Carnegie Hall, Washington Cathedral, and Salzburg, Austria. Ben was an outdoorsman, a canoeist, watercolorist, and member of the Artist’s Guild of Newport. He is survived by children Stephen, Carolyn, Anne, and Noel; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
